The French film “The Grocer’s Son” will be shown at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, at the Easton Area Public Library.

After his father suffers a heart attack, 30-year-old Antoine reluctantly returns to his rural hometown after ten years in the city. His unhappily married older brother, who stayed with their parents when Antoine left, insists it is time for him to shoulder some responsibility. Antoine assumes the duties of driving the family van, selling produce and groceries to the area’s mostly elderly rural inhabitants. Brusque and detached, he offends the old customers, many his father’s friends, until he is joined by Claire, a friend visiting from the city. A surprise hit in France, this variation of the prodigal son theme captures family dynamics and also presents a realistic portrait of the self-reliant people who live close to the land. Director Eric Guirado spent 18 months filming mobile grocers and their customers in Corsica, the Pyrenees, and the Alps.

The film, which runs approximately 96 minutes in French with English subtitles, is free and open to the public. The film is not rated.

The movie will be shown in the Catherine Drake Meeting Room, which is handicapped accessible from Church Street. Patrons are welcome to bring light refreshments.

“The Grocer’s Son” is part of an ongoing series of films the Library is presenting through its subscription with Recorded Books. Recorded Books has partnered with Film Movement, a group of filmmakers dedicated to making festival winners and first-run independent and foreign films available to a wider audience.
